Q. Why do you say that baptism is the name of Jesus is important. John the baptist preached repentance and I think that one can repent and be saved without being baptized into the name of Jesus.
A. There are two baptisms to discuss here.
Baptism unto repentance (Acts 13:24). Baptism for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38).
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem (Luke 24:47).
Why do some deny the baptism in Jesus name for the remission of sins today? Why do some preach that all you have to do is repent and be baptized? Why do some baptize without the name but rather baptize in the titles of(Matt 19:28) ? This answer may surprise you.
Johns gospel was the message before Calvary and therefore the message before salvation and the new birth under grace. John preached a baptism of repentance but his message was but half of the story he pointed to another who would baptize with the Holy Ghost and fire, signifying that repentance alone does not remit sins or make a man a new creation.
Jesus came to give us the full new birth experience where a man repents and is born of water and spirit and is born again, something John could not bring to his followers as there was blood shed for the remission of sins until Jesus died.
It’s not a question of one of the other but rather both repentance and remission of sins. Jesus command was administered at Jerusalem. That day they sat in the upper room and received Peter’s command. repent and be baptized everyone of you for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38) .From that day to this believers have been brought have been brought into the faith of those that bear his name, through baptism into his name.
It’s time to baptize in the name of Jesus, just as the apostles baptized in the name (Acts 2: 8,10).
