I love this old hymn “O thou who camest from above” this first line does it for me, by Samuel Sebastian Wesley to the Tune of Hereford. His grandfather, Charles Wesley.
1. O thou who camest from above
the fire celestial to impart,
kindle a flame of sacred love
on the mean altar of my heart.
2. There let it for thy glory burn
with inextinguishable blaze,
and trembling to its source return
in humble prayer and fervent praise.
3. Jesus confirm my heart’s desire
to work and speak and think for thee;
still let me guard the holy fire
and still stir up the gift in me.
4. Still let me prove thy perfect will,
my acts of faith and love repeat;
till death thine endless mercies seal,
and make the sacrifice complete.
Samuel Wesley, no doubt reflecting on his grandfathers legacy and mission, wrote their hymn, probably a a prayer of his heart, no doubt it God was stirring a divine zeal Calling him to a new level of divine CONSECRATION. The fire celestial to impart, kindle a flame of sacred love on the mean altar of my heart. There, yes there let me for they glory burn with inextinguishable blaze. The words themselves are enough to revive a man’s soul. My Prayer; Consecrate my heart afresh today of God. Thou consuming fire burn on the mean altar of my heart. Still stir up the gift in me. and he will yes he will. If you are praying this prayer with me today. God will burn in you his will, his word, his passion, his fire. Don’t underestimate God. If you can pray it, he can use YOU! Yes he will.
