The Angel of the Lord
Scripture reading (Genesis 28)

PROPOSITION:It is my proposition that the person of God was an angel in the Old Testament.
INTRODUCTION: God reveals himself progressively throughout scripture. First as Spirit then as an angel and indeed many other forms. The progressive revelation of God is seen in Jesus who said I AM. A revelation of God himself in person.

1.The Angel of the Lord is The Lord God himself.

The God which fed me all my life long .. The angel which redeemed me (Genesis 48:15,16).
Called “God Almighty” in verse three (Genesis 48;3) God almighty meaning, El Shaddai, the all-sufficient God, the Outpourer and Dispenser of mercies, The name almighty God that appeared to him at Bethel :(Genesis 28:13). and again he calls an “angel”

2. The Angel of the Lord appeared to Moses.
.. in a bush saying I am the God of thy Fathers (Acts 7;30).

3. When the Angel of the Lord appeared it was God himself in person.
The angel of the Lord appeared unto Moses in a flame of fire and said..

“And we have full proof that this was no created angel, but the Messenger of the Divine Council, the Lord Jesus Christ. Who then was the angel that redeemed Jacob, and whom he invoked to bless Ephraim and Manasseh? Is it not Jesus? He alone can be called Goel, the redeeming Kinsman; for he alone took part of our flesh and blood that the right of redemption might be his…” (Adam Clarke Commentary (Genesis 48).

4.The angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah and his wife. Manoah said we have seen God.
(Judges 13;3,22) for Manoah did not know he was the Angel of the Lord (v16). Manoah asked him his name “And the angel said ” Why do you ask my name seeing it is secret (KJV). seeing it is wonderful (Judges 13:18 NKJV).

5. God’s name was not discovered until Jesus.
In him dwells the fulness of the godhead bodily. (Col 2;9)

6. God who was spirit became man.
Trinitarians will have us belike that Jesus as second person became man. this would not make sense why and how would or could a man become a babe.The evidence is clear God himself took on flesh (1 Timothy 3;16) Spirit took on human expression.

7. Jesus revealed that secret name.

I have revealed not then they name the name thou gavest me to bear (John 12:28) The name at which even knee shall bow and every tongue confess to God (Phil 2;9. Roman 14;11). When we use the name of “Jesus” we confess to GOD!

The redemptive revelation of the person god is in the name of Jesus. No one could know the name of god until he himself became our redemption. hence the word salvation and God are intertwined. Jesus means salvation. “The Lord has become my light and my salvation” (Psalm 91;16).

8.And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. (Acts 7;30) When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,(v31) Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold (v32).

Jesus said, Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am (John 8:56-59).

9.Jesus is the I am
The I AM that appeared to Abraham and said I AM thy shield and thy exceeding great reward.(Genesis 14;15).

10. Jesus is the Lord God.
The LORD who came too Abraham in angelic form comes to us as JESUS.

NOTES:Jesus is Lord the proof of his deity and oneness lies here. He is greater than the angels and can visit us himself. The Angelo the Lord is not another who does his work but himself doing his own work. almighty he is as is God. Many worship angels seek angels and desire to see angels the truth is this do we know the angel of the Lord as God, do we see that Jesus is God! when angels come they dispel the lie that there is a trinity of beings called God or that angels are greater than the Lord.
